I came to Margaret Coel after I'd read all the Tony Hillerman's; I needed my fix of Native American detective stories. What I didn't realise at the time was that I was buying into the angst of a nation, the lost dreams and sorrowful songs of a people. In all her books the sense of loss is great and when that is coupled with the "forbidden" attraction between Father O'Malley and the Arapaho lawyer, Vicky Holden (let alone the baggage they are carrying) there is a hole opened up before us that should swallow us up, soul and all, leaving us in true depths of depression. But not so. It is pride and love that saves us: the battle of a people struggling to preserve their past and help their children and grandchildren combat poverty, alcohol and drugs; the love, and faith, of John O'Malley for this people with whom he has so much in common; and that of Vicky for her embattled people."The Silent Spirit" encapsulates all this in a simple yet fascinating storyline that begins with the making of the first silent Western, "The Covered Wagon", and ends with the search of a young Arapaho for the answer to the mystery concerning the disappearance of his grandfather in Hollywood. I can understand how some of Coel's fervent readers might quail at the mental struggles that haunt Father O'Malley and Vicky Holden in the excellent Wind River Mysteries, but our worries and our fears stay with us in life - so why not in fiction?

Again, Coel's research and depiction of Arapaho traditions, past and present, is very well done. Her characters are engaging, the story line
between the Jesuit and the Arapaho lawyer is realistic. Just enough tension.
All of the Wind River Reservation novels are extremely well crafted and an excellent read. They deal honestly and effectively with the numerous problems that the Indians face not only in the present, but also as a result of the attitudes of the white community in the past. The Silent Spirit, dealing as it does with the movie industry and its strange combination of glitz and fakery, and the effect this had on the Indian culture of the past, is fascinating. I learned some things I didn't know, and greatly admire the depth of Ms. Coel's research.
Margaret Coel's "The Silent Spirit" is a terrific mystery that includes a really fascinating sub-story about the making of a classic film in the Hollywood of 1923--a history that relates directly to modern story line.
This was my first encounter with a Margaret Coel story and I was mightily impressed by the Arapaho/Wyoming backdrop, the creative character development and credible details about the reservation community and interactions of the people living there. Ms. Coel clearly knows a great deal about plains Indians and their cultures, and sympathetically and astutely weaves all of this into a complex story that respects the reader's intelligence.
A big bonus in "The Silent Spirit" for this reader was its inclusion of a kind of homage to cowboy film star, Tim McCoy. As a kid, I never missed one of Tim McCoy's Saturday television programs about American Indians and their cultures which were always highly respectful and accurate teaching sessions for kids (and others) who otherwise learned about Native Americans through the stereotypical "oaters" of the 1930s and 1940s that were standard fare on early TV. McCoy was a real hero in this context and is treated as such in Coel's novel.
I'm purposely not getting into the plot of "The Silent Spirit" which other reviewers have already done. Suffice it to say that the book is a great read which I happily recommend to other readers.
The Silent Spirit was great reading as are any of the "Wind River Mystery Books" I love learning about the Native Americans in this particular area, not that far from where I live in Colorado. Margaret Coel is a super author,puts a lot of work into creating her novels. I would hope that everyone would take time to read all of her mystery books.
The book arrived very timely and in excellent condition. I love the book. However I am a Margaret Coel fan. This is another excellent mystery on the Arapahoe reservation..
I have been enjoying this entire series or at least the ones available as an ebook. In this story it zips back and forth to the 1920s and the first epic western. You have a little history and some comments about Indian treatment. They were not treated well. So what else is new? I still wish she would cover a little more about the Arapaho and Shoshone ways. The same things come in every book. Nevertheless the stories keep you reading.
The Silent Spirit was one of the best of the series. I appreciated the interplay between the characters, the historic plot of an all but forgotten era, and the development of the past and present into an engaging mystery. Tension is always present and seeking resolution that almost gets there through out the story, but moves to another phase. Interesting and clever.
